The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee ( SNCC) was formed in 1960. Both black and white students initially joined the movement, which used tactics such as conducting sit-ins against segregation, encouraging blacks to register to vote, and teaching rural blacks to read and write. However, under the leadership of Stokely Carmichael beginning in 1966, SNCC began to embrace "black power." Following is a position paper prepared by SNCC in the spring of 1966 in which it explains its support for black power.
