#BlackLivesMatter

Black Lives Matter began as a hashtag, movement, and foundation in response to the acquittal of the murderer of Trayvon Martin in 2013. The phrase shines a spotlight on the historic systemic oppression of Black people in the United States and elsewhere that has and does result in violence, mass incarceration, poverty, disease, and unequal access to opportunity.

Finding resources online

In addition to searching for "black lives matter" and logging key names and terms you hear and see in the news, try:

  • Search the hashtag #FergusonSyllabus on Twitter. Started by Prof. Marcia Chatelain, it was (and still is) used to crowdsource resources on studying police violence against Black people following the killing of Michael Brown.
